INTRODUCTION

I'm interested in how people in early America dealt with racial, ethnic and religious diversity, how they constructed ideas about citizenship and gender roles and how those concepts changed.

TEACHING INTERESTS

I am excited about making early American history relevant to non-history majors as well as sharing the latest scholarship with history students.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

I just returned from a year in Philadelphiaa, where I worked on the history of the German Society of Pennsylvania. Founded in 1764, the GSP is the oldest German ethnic organization in the western hemisphere and it still exists today. Ethnicity Matters: The History of the German Society of Pennsylvania Since 1764 will be published by the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C. and will be available later this year.
