Dr. Joy DeGruy explores the historical and current impact that enslavement as a historical trauma has had on Black people and on the United States in general. Dr. DeGruy’s academic research, focusing on Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, suggests that centuries of enslavement, followed by systemic racism and oppression, have resulted in multigenerational adaptive behaviors, some positive and resilient, and others detrimental and destructive.
