January 27, 2014

CSULA Math Department to host 65th Annual American Mathematics Contest

What:  Dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth, the 65th American Mathematics Contest (AMC) at Cal State L.A. will identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics. The contest is aimed at spurring interest in mathematics and developing talent through the excitement of friendly competition and problem solving in a timed format.

Who:  Grade school and secondary school students from Arcadia to Thousand Oaks with a knack for mathematics will participate in this upcoming challenge. Both the AMC 10 (for 10th grade and below) and AMC 12 (for 12th grade and below) will feature a 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems, which students will try to understand and solve with pre-calculus concepts.

When:  Feb. 4 and Feb. 19, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Where:  The competition—hosted by the Cal State L.A. Math Department—will be held on the Cal State L.A. campus in the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center, room 212. Permit parking is available in Lot 1. For campus map and directions: www.calstate.edu/univ/maps/.

More:  The AMC 12 and the AMC 10 are part of a series of contest sponsored each year by The Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Directed by Steven Dunbar, the AMC offers the only math competition series in the country, which leads to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO), the United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad, and the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program.  From this group of students, the AMC sends the highly competitive USA Team to the prestigious annual International Mathematical Olympiad.

Each year more than 350,000 students in roughly 6,000 schools participate in the MAA AMC Contests. Of these, 10,000 students qualify each year to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination scheduled in this spring. From that competition, approximately 500 students will be invited to take the prestigious USAMO in early May.

Info:  Details concerning the 2014 AMC 10/12 contests for high school as well as the rest of AMC’s program are available at http://amc.maa.org. For more information, call (800) 527-3690.
