Welcome to the ULRN Program

These pages are designed to help high school and community college counselors advise their students who are considering Cal State LA, and want to be elementary school or special education teachers. The information will help students understand our program, apply to Cal State LA, and prepare to major in Urban Learning.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Learning is an integrated teacher preparation program that combines courses in teacher education with major courses emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to understanding urban learning as a social phenomenon. Major coursework is supported by a depth area in the social sciences that emphasizes the study of diversity in an urban context.

Students in the Urban Learning major will elect either an option in elementary education or special education.  The elementary education option will lead to the Multiple Subject credential, preparing students to teach in elementary schools.  The special education option will lead to an Education Specialist credential, preparing students to teach in special education settings.  The program offers freshman and transfer students a timely and contemporary alternative to traditional teacher preparation programs, as well as degree and professional preparation in one coordinated course of study.

High School Counselors

The Urban Learning Program offiers freshmen and sophomores completing their general education courses individualized plans of study, with one-on-one advisement.  We also coordinate with high school counselors to assure they have the most current information needed to assist students considering admission to Cal State LA and the Urban Learning Program.  Visit our High School Counselors page for more information.

Community College Counselors

The Urban Learning Program offers junior transfer students a one-of-a-kind alternative to traditional teacher preparation majors, grounding them in not only what to teach and how to teach, but the context of teaching and learning.  Teachers prepared to teach in urban schools are in high demand, but the challenges can be formidable.  Visit our Community College Counselors page to see how you can prepare transfer students considering admission to Cal State LA and the Urban Learning Program to make a successful, informed transfer
