She also presented in two sessions, “Nuevas publicaciones de la ANLE” and “Hablemos de la ANLE,” during the Annual Meeting of the Asociación Americana de Profesores de Español y Portugués (AATSP), Chicago, July 6-9, 2017. She participated in a roundtable session, “El español estadounidense a debate,” organized by the Instituto Cervantes at Harvard University, Sept. 21, 2017, and in the “Encuentro sobre el español en los Estados Unidos: Retos para la formación de un corpus de referencia,” at Harvard University, Sept. 22-23, 2017.

Ramani Durvasula (Psychology) joined nine of Cal State LA’s psychology students in the United Kingdom for a two-week long study tour designed to give students a broader, more global perspective on their studies. At the University of Worcester in the United Kingdom, Durvasula also delivered a talk to staff and students on “Narcissism in America,” January 2018.

The world premiere of a play by José Cruz González (Theatre and Dance), titled “American Mariachi,” was directed by James Vásquez and produced by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in Denver, Colorado, on Feb. 2, 2018.

Richard Wearn (Art) exhibited a project in Taiwan at the Taipei International Contemporary Art Fair, one of Asia's most significant contemporary art fairs, Jan. 19-23, 2018. He was featured as the headline speaker in a series of lectures focused on the globalization of contemporary art.

Elaine Eun-Young Kang (Computer Science), Dean Emily Allen (ECST), Associate Dean Jianyu Dong (ECST) and Matthew Jackson (Psychology) received a nearly $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase degree completion and career readiness among students in engineering and computer science majors. The grant is funded through the NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) Program, 2018–23.

Kimberly Kisler (Public Health) received this year’s APLA Health Leonard Peterson Award on behalf of Cal State LA during the APLA Health’s Annual Friends in Deed awards ceremony at The Warehouse in Los Angeles on April 28, 2018. Cal State LA has been recognized for providing professional interns who exemplify “a continuing commitment to life by making an extraordinary difference in the fight against AIDS and the need for accessible health care.”

Jeff Santner (Mechanical Engineering), Ted Nye (Professional Practice Program) and Dean Emily Allen (ECST) received a $100,000 grant from the Southern California Gas Company to support research and undergraduate education in combustion engineering, March 14, 2018. The fund will also support undergraduate education on natural gas combustion, senior design projects, and student research.
