The U.S. premiere of JOE at the Luckman Theatre at Cal State L.A. on Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m., with an additional performance on Saturday, March 9 at 8 p.m., will be at once riveting, metaphorical and highly musical.
Performed by 32 dancers from two Canadian companies, the footwork of the dancers provides the only soundscape for the piece. They transform the stage into a booming percussion instrument while making a striking artistic statement on the conformism of modern societies.
Joe, the first work of Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault, reveals Perreault's basic approach to dance which is characterized by the use of varied spaces and large architectural sets, the exploration of the musical potential of bodies, the choice of atypical dancers dressed in city clothes that are sometimes too big, too tight or too old, in a manner that punctuates the body with an imperfection or a sign of time passing.
Joe has been heralded as an extraordinary force in simple forms, elicting emotional intensity from the dancers' impeccable timing and the performance's revelation of man's tendency to conform, gather and seek refuge and strength in numbers. Joe is a production of Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault in Montreal in collaboration with Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers and enjoys a 10-year history of rave reviews, cult status and popularity which has earned it landmark notoriety in the history of Canadian modern dance.
The Harriet & Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, noted for its integrity in bringing innovative dance, music and theatre to Southern California, is located at the Eastern Avenue exit of the I-10 (San Bernardino) freeway, on the California State University, Los Angeles campus.
