Graduating seniors showcase inflatable Mars structure, hydrogen calibration unit, fault detection research, MicroMouse, more
Engineering Senior Design Expo at Cal State L.A. Friday, June 4
Note to editors and news directors: In order to prepare students to be competitive in today’s workforce, CSULA graduating seniors have opportunities to apply classroom and textbook knowledge into real-world applications.
A student design team has been working with Boeing to redesign, fabricate and test an inflatable structure that will allow a landing craft to deliver an instrumentation payload safely to the surface of Mars. While one team worked with SEMPRA to develop a prototype to accurately dispense fuel to hydrogen-fueled vehicles, another student team was at work with Space Systems/Loral on a deployment system for solar-powered panels in space.
On Friday, June 4, more than 35 engineering student teams will present their research findings, competition entries, and corporate-sponsored design projects at the annual Senior Design Expo. Sponsored by the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at Cal State L.A., the Expo will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Golden Eagle Ballroom, on the CSULA campus.

Along with other industry-sponsored senior design projects, the Expo will include presentations of findings for the following student research: Non-Intrusive Investigation of Soot Formation in Swirling Flames; Fault Detection on the SPACE Testbed; GPS Signal Tracking: An Analytical Method for Improving Indoor GPS; Experimental Core Facility for the Analysis and Control of Thermofluid System; Mission Assurance Management Environment; and Light Electric Vehicle.
As part of the Expo, the student teams will also exhibit their cutting-edge engineering projects designed for competition: the MicroMouse robotic rodent, Mini Baja off-road vehicle, Formula SAE racecar, Super Eagle supermileage vehicle, Aero Design aircraft, and Human-Powered Vehicle.
