‘Border Knowledges: A Conversation with Tracy Wilkinson’
welcomes public to hear the latest from veteran journalist
Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Times’ Mexico bureau chief will share her journalistic experiences and perspectives in a public discussion at Cal State L.A. Wednesday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the University-Student Union Theater.
“Border Knowledges: A Conversation with Tracy Wilkinson” will focus on the trafficking of drugs, guns, and human beings – along with how border issues have been reported and represented.
Wilkinson has covered wars, crises and daily life on three continents. Her career began with United Press International, for which she covered the Contra war in Nicaragua. She joined the Los Angeles Times in 1987. For the Times, she has been a metro writer, a foreign correspondent in San Salvador, El Salvador; a correspondent in Vienna covering the war in the Balkans; and a reporter in Jerusalem. Now the Times’ Mexico bureau chief, she also contributes to its “La Plaza” blog.
According to Beth Baker-Cristales, acting director of Cal State L.A.’s Latin American Studies Program, “Tracy is very well known among those who study Latin America for her many decades of excellent reporting on the region – including reporting from Central America during the civil wars of the 1980s, and now serving as Mexico bureau chief.”
Enrique Ochoa, a professor of history and Latin American studies at Cal State L.A., will moderate the session, which will be in English. There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Vanderbilt University. She recently published her book, “The Vatican’s Exorcists: Driving out the Devil in the 21st Century.”
A reception will follow the conversation at 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by Cal State L.A.’s American Communities Program and Cross Cultural Centers.
