| 2000 CSU Bautzer Faculty Los Angeles, CA - Carlos Robles, professor of Biology and Microbiology at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently named the University's fifth Bautzer Faculty at the CSU Advancement Academy Conference in Long Beach. The Bautzer Faculty University Advancement Award enables faculty to learn more about professional university development at national conferences and CSU workshops throughout the year. The scholarships were established in 1996 as a result of a gift from Nicola D. Bautzer (in memory of her husband Gregson Bautzer, a member of the CSU Board of Trustees and the CSU Foundation Board of Governors) and matching funds from the CSU Advancement Academy, to recognize the importance of the involvement of faculty members in CSU advancement efforts, particularly among alumni and within local communities. Carlos Robles received his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and joined the Cal State L.A. faculty as professor of biology in 1988. Since then, he had held several positions at the University, including Acting Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and both Associate and Acting Chair for the Department of Biology and Microbiology. Robles is the director of the newly-formed Center for Environmental Analysis (CEA-CREST). The Center is the first of its kind funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on the West Coast. "As the lead spokesperson for the Center, Dr. Robles has a keen interest in learning more about institutional advancement and fund raising so that he can participate successfully in securing private external support. We are proud to welcome him to the team," says Kyle Button, vice president for Institutional Advancement at Cal State L.A. In a congratulatory letter to Robles, Douglas X. Patino, CSU vice chancellor for University Advancement, wrote: "The California State University believes that advancement efforts should be driven by the academic needs of the individual campus. In order to obtain optimum fund raising success, it is crucial to provide faculty with a greater understanding of advancement activities. To that end, your professional achievement and sincere interest in serving your institution have garnered you this prestigious award." Past Bautzer Faculty at Cal State L.A. include professors Jaime Regalado, director of Cal State L.A.'s Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute for Public Affairs; Michael Roffe, department of Psychology; and Simeon Slovacek, division of Educational Foundations and Interdivisional Studies, and Barbara Clark, division of Special Education, both in the University's Charter College of Education.
