MOTORISTS’ ONE-STOP SAFETY SHOP AT CSULA MAY 15
Agencies, advocates team to offer free, no-citation vehicle inspections; lessons on dangers of distractions; and—while it lasts—free food from 10-2
Los Angeles, CA – Using free vehicle inspections, the promise of no citations, and free food (while it lasts) as enticements, a group of law enforcement agencies and driving-safety advocates is encouraging drivers to visit a one-stop driving-safety shop Saturday, May 15, at Cal State L.A.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at several stations in front of the University-Student Union, police officers will conduct personal vehicle inspections. Drivers will also be able to visit booths to learn more from safe-driving organizations.
Participants will learn how to check their own vehicles for equipment violations. They will also be able to get information on vehicle safety, the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and the most common cause of death among teenage drivers—distracted driving.
If traffic volume permits, every vehicle will be inspected for equipment violations, with drivers given a list of corrections needed. No citations will be issued. Pedestrians are also welcome.
To present the one-stop shop for safer driving, Cal State L.A.’s University Police Department (UPD) is working with the University-Student Union, Los Angeles Police Department Traffic Control Division, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Insurance, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and Impact Teen Drivers.
According to Cal State L.A. UPD Chief Greg King, “We have seen a growing number of equipment violation citations in our community. We hope to assist the public with information on how to keep their vehicles safe and legal on the road. Drivers who are conscientious about their vehicles are usually conscientious about their driving.”
UPD Sgt. Christine Dosland said, “We want to educate the public about the laws that govern their vehicle’s equipment, about low-cost insurance options, and about the dangers of distracted and reckless driving. We offer this service in order to keep our community safe and to give the public a chance to speak to a police officer regarding their vehicle without fear of being cited. Teenagers and children are also welcome, and we will have safe-driving and crime-prevention resources for them, too. ”
