For water supply study, civil engineering seniors gain mentorship opportunities, real-world applications

NCEES to present award to Cal State L.A.
for Puddingstone Reservoir Operational Level Study

Note to editors and news directors: Water supply is a major concern throughout Southern California and requires innovative solutions to meet increasing demands due to drought conditions and dwindling supplies.

Through mentorship of practicing engineers and direction of Cal State L.A.’s faculty John Shamma, Cal State L.A.’s civil engineering student team was challenged to evaluate costs and benefits associated with operating the Puddingstone Reservoir at different levels to allow the conservation of more storm water for recharge into local aquifers. Puddingstone Reservoir is located in Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park near the cities of Pomona, La Verne and San Dimas.

Based on the results of Cal State L.A.’s civil engineering senior design study—entitled “Puddingstone Reservoir Operational Level Study—with partnering local agencies, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) will present Cal State L.A.’s Civil Engineering department a $7,500 NCEES Engineering Award for Connecting Professional Practice and Education.

The NCEES award presentation will take place Tuesday, May 18, 6:10 p.m., on the Cal State L.A. campus. Participants will include representatives from Cal State L.A., NCEES, and the L.A. County Department of Public Works. Reporters are welcome to attend the award presentation to discover the results from the study.
