With children’s readings, folklórico, literary sessions, mariachi, festival to welcome hundreds from the community

Cal State L.A. to host the 2010 L.A. Latino Book
and Family Festival Oct. 9-10

Los Angeles, CA   With more than 100 Latino authors, a children’s stage, folklorico dance, book vendors, food booths, and sessions in English and Spanish, the Los Angeles Latino Book and Family Festival (LBFF) will be held at California State University, Los Angeles – Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9 and 10.

The two-day LBFF will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Greenlee Plaza, near the southwest corner of the campus. The festival is free and open to the public.

This year’s featured authors are Victor Villaseñor and Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez. Additionally, Father Greg Boyle from Homeboy Industries will present the keynote address on Saturday, Oct. 9, 6 p.m., at “An Evening With the Authors” benefits dinner.

The festival’s workshops will explore literature depicting the immigrant experience, Chicano theatre and history, the barrios, cultural diversity and feminism. The sessions will also cover such topics as prose and poetry, book publishing, mural art, memoir and fiction writing, the future of journalism, teens’ vampire books, and more.

Panels moderated by CSULA faculty members will include “Getting the Word Out: Book Promotion 101,”  “Beyond Smash, Bang & Boom!: Writing Stories Kids Want to Read,” “Report From Agraria: Authors Speak on the State of the Nation’s Breadbasket,” “Beyond Happily Ever After: Writing Women’s Fiction,” “VIVA CARTOONS!: Latino Cartoonists & Authors” and “Beginning, Middle, and End: The Art of the Short Story.”

A highlight of the festival will be its annual ballet folklórico exhibitions to be held on the Main Stage. Mariachi Diamante de San Diego, the group Sonsoles, and the Pacifico Dance Company will also be performing at the festival.

For the little bookworms, there will be the Children’s Stage featuring storytimes and readings by authors of children’s books, along with a Son Jarocho music concert by Sol y Mar and dance lessons with Norma Pedregon, a multicultural dance instructor and performer.

Actor, community activist and Cal State L.A. alumnus Edward James Olmos is the co-producer of the Latino Book & Family Festival, a weekend event held in several cities to promote literacy, culture and education amid a fun and family-friendly environment. The festival was launched in 1997 in Los Angeles by the non-profit organization Latino Literacy Now. 

The 2010 Los Angeles festival is co-sponsored by several Cal State L.A. programs, including: the College of Arts and Letters; College of Business and Economics; Charter College of Education; College of Natural and Social Sciences; Gigi Gaucher-Morales Memorial Lecture Series; Center for Contemporary Poetry and Poetics; Office of Community Engagement; American Communities Program; Department of Chicano Studies; Department of Child and Family Studies; Department of English; Department of Modern Languages and Literatures; and Statement Magazine Student Association.
