Prior to 1969, there were various Mexican Student organizations such as the Mexican American Student Conference (MASC), United Mexican American Students (UMAS), and Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO), throughout the Southwest (Aztlan). In March 1969, students, teachers, and community activists met at the University of California at Santa Barbara and drafted El Plan De Santa Barbara, a Chicano Plan for Higher Education. At this meeting, it was agreed upon that all participating student organizations from here on shall be known as MEChA.

Weekly Meetings:

Every Thursday at 3:15 - 4:15 PM at the Chicanx/Latinx Resource Center.

Located in the 2nd floor of the University-Student Union (U-SU) in the Cross Cultural Center.

10/22/17 - Labor Organizer Larry Itliong

Larry It

The Delano Manongs tells the story of farm labor organizer Larry Itliong and a group of Filipino farm workers who instigated one of the American farm labor movement’s finest hours – The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brought about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW). While the movement is known for Cesar Chavez’s leadership and considered a Chicano movement, Filipinos played a pivotal role. Filipino labor organizer, Larry Itliong, a cigar-chomping union veteran, organized a group of 1500 Filipinos to strike against the grape growers of Delano, California, beginning a collaboration between Filipinos, Chicanos and other ethnic workers that would go on for years.

From Olvera Plaza to 500 W. Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90012

Renters in East LA are planning a march Thursday to demand rent control protections in unincorporated areas of LA County.

The march will begin at Olvera Plaza at 12:30 p.m. and continue to the Temple Street offices of County Supervisor Hilda Solis, who represents East LA.

The Los Angeles Center for Community Law and Action, in conjunction with Union de Vecinos and the LA Tenants Union, is organizing the event. Leading the marchers will be Roberto Perez and Carolina Rodriguez, two East LA renters who challenged a 63 percent rent increase in court—and won.
