Our Workshops cover a range of topics to help you maximize your experience at Cal State LA. Guardian Scholars must attend a minimum of three workshops per semester. If you are experiencing academic challenges, please contact the Guardian Scholars Program.

Stress Less for Success

Tuesday, October 11 |  3 – 4 p.m. | Student Service Building 120

This presentation focuses on teaching students about the physiologic impact of stress on the body and mind, as well as helping students understand the different types of stress, positive coping skills for managing stress, and creating their own stress management action plan.

Career Influence Reflection

Friday, October 14 |  1 – 2 p.m. | Zoom

Students will learn in this workshop how to develop short- and long-term career goal planning. Discuss the role a college degree plays in career goals.

Learning Skills Workshop

Date: Tuesday, October 18| Time: 3 – 4 p.m. | Location: Student Service Building 120

The students will learn what is their Learning as they participate in the workshop and interact with a group of students. The sessions will help them improve their academic area of academic skills. Students will engage in a mixture of activities, peer learning, and advice from the presenter.

Statement of Purpose Graduate Programs

Date: Thursday, October 20 | Time: 3 – 4 p.m. | Location: Student Service Building 120

Students will learn how to develop a statement of purpose to apply for a master's or doctorate. They will be able to articulate their goals and interests for the graduate program. Students will learn to develop a strong statement of purpose that will clearly and specifically lay out why their desire to continue their education. Also, they can provide evidence of experience and success tied to the graduate program they apply to.

Time Management Workshop

Date: Tuesday, October 25 | Time: 3 – 4  p.m. | Location: Library NB 131

The Time Management workshop provides information for the GSP to better manage their time, organize, and plan how to divide their time into different activities. After participating in the workshop, the students will develop excellent time management skills, reflecting on their academic success and in the future when they graduate and become professionals in the field of their degree.

Career Influences and Decision-Making

Date: Thursday, October 27 | Time: 3 – 4:30  p.m. | Location: Zoom

Students will learn how to develop an effective and professional resume and cover letter. At the same time, they will learn the importance to use professional language and how to transfer the skills into their professional resume.

How to be Successful at the University

Date: Tuesday, November 1 | Time: 3 – 4 p.m. | Location: Student Service Building 120

This workshop will provide information about the steps students need to follow in order to be successful at the university. Students will learn that the first year in college is the most difficult; therefore they need to seek all the support they need, as they transition from high school to college or transfer from a community college.

POP! Productivity Over Procrastination

This presentation will help students learn the methods and skills to reduce procrastination, improve time management, and enhance concentration.

Plagiarism Workshop

Date: Thursday, November 17 | Time: 3 – 4 p.m. | Location: Community Room Library NB131

Students will learn how to use citations on a report and avoid plagiarism which can affect their academic success. Students will learn the most common sources that are required in college. They will know that using ideas, work, and words from authors and not giving credit is considered plagiarizing.

Who is Your Professional Self? Building Your Brand

Date: Wednesday, November 30 | Time: 3 – 4:30 p.m. | Location: Zoom

Students will learn the process of applying for a job and how to prepare for a job interview. Also, the workshop will provide information on how to dress professionally for an interview and once they become professional in the field of their degree.

Winter Break Goal Setting

Students will be able to learn how to set up goals, executive them, and accomplished them. This workshop will help students understand the importance of setting goals.
