In order to be considered for a Federal Direct Loan, you must:
- Submit a Free Application Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current academic year, and file any additional documents that may be required.
- Complete an Entrance Loan Counseling Session online here: https://studentaid.gov/app/counselingInstructions.action?counselingType=entrance. First time borrowers and returning borrowers who did not have a loan in the prior award year at Cal State LA must attend an Entrance Loan Counseling Session. Borrowers who had a loan in the prior award year at Cal State LA do not have to attend another entrance Loan Counseling Session.
- Sign the Master Promissory Note, if required. This can be done electronically by going to https://studentaid.gov/mpn and following the instructions. If you wish to sign a paper MPN, please contact the Center for Student Financial Aid. Master Promissory Notes may be valid for multiple academic years.
- If you have previously declined your loans, you may complete the Federal Direct Loan Application to have your loan eligibility reevaluated.
