EOP FALL 2020 VIRTUAL ENRICHMENT WORKSHOPS

Our Enrichment Workshops cover a range of topics to help you maximize your experience at Cal State LA. EOP students must attend a minimum of three Enrichment Workshops per semester. If you are experiencing academic challenges, please contact your EOP counselor to ask about the Academic Success Workshop series.

Stay Sharp: Get Ahead by Getting Started!

Date: Friday, September 4 | Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Location: Zoom

This workshop introduces students to organizational tools and techniques to help them start the semester strong. Tools such as the  "Daily Schedule" and "VIP Sheet" will help balance personal and academic priorities while creating University-level skills and habits. Join the Growth Zone team to help conquer the Fall 2020 Semester.


Budgeting 101: Let's Talk Dollars & Cents

Date: Wednesday, September 16 | Time: 3 – 4 p.m. | Location: Zoom

Have you ever wanted to make a purchase but need some time to save to meet your goal? If you were successful at meeting your goal, how accomplished and proud did you feel?  Well, you can feel this way most of the time if you create and maintain a budget. Budgeting 101: Dollars and Cents will give you tips to manage and keep a budget no matter your financial goals.  


Growth Zone Study Night 1

Date: Thursday, September 17 | Time: 5 – 8 p.m. | Location: Zoom

The purpose of the Growth Zone Study Nights program is to provide a safe and welcoming space for EOP students. Students can come to study alone or with friends. There will be access to SI leaders who can support them in Statistics and Precalculus. There will also be Growth Zone Mentors who can provide on the spot study skills advice.


Tools on Tools on Tools: Operation Midterm Ready

Date: Friday, September 18 | Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Location: Zoom

The purpose of the Growth Zone "Tools on Tools on Tools" workshop is to highlight the importance of having a set of learning strategies that can be individualized to better prepare for future midterm and final exams.

Taming Time: Where did my 168 Hours Go?

Date: Thursday, September 24 | Time: 2 – 3:30 p.m. | Location: Zoom

Time Management is a skill. Mastering the art of balancing time is critical to achieving academic and personal success. This Taming Time workshop will provide you with positive strategies to take away for efficient time management and maximizing your academic, and personal successes. You will learn how to maximize your 168-hour week, learn tips for prioritizing and techniques for keeping on track, and acquire skills to arrange a well- balanced school, work, and play schedule.


Writing an Effective Email to Get it Read

Date: Monday, September 28 | Time: 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. | Location: Zoom

Writing effective emails is an important professional life skill to have early in your career.  This universal and valuable skill can be applied in various settings, including reaching out to your professor, a job, or networking opportunities.  We will dissect the email into its parts and explain why they are important (e.g. TO field, Subject Line, Body of Message).

The General Education Program is the "breadth" of knowledge in higher education. Here you will gain information about the General Education (GE) Program and University requirements. You will learn how to create a personal "roadmap" (educational plan) for academic progress (PRE) towards declaring the major as well as discover the Major Specific Courses (MSC) required for specified majors.


Visions in Color: Welcoming LGBTQIA + Students to Campus

Join EOP & the GSRC as we facilitate a discussion about how to build affirming and uplifting support networks as an LGBTQIA+ identified student during college. The purpose of the "Staring in My Rearview" workshop is to help students reflect on recent midterm exam outcomes and modify or develop an improved and actionable study plan for future exams.

A College Journey to Success: My Personal Story (Gregorio Alcantar)

As first-generation college students, we struggle with fear and stress when we begin this new chapter in our lives: COLLEGE.  Although you just started this journey, there is an endpoint waiting for you, full of opportunity and success.  Let me give you a glimpse of those successes and opportunities by sharing my own story.  I will also share my family nucleus, academic journey, fears, and perseverance that led me to obtain my college degree.

Growth Zone's Building Our Brains Workshop Series: Part 4: Our Destination is Our Motivation

Date: Friday, November 13 | Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Location: Zoom

This workshop is aimed at helping students find the motivation to finish the last leg of the semester strong. Students will connect to the reasons why they entered the university, identify barriers/obstacles that stand in front, and commit to strategies that will help them reach their goals. A backdrop of this workshop is learning about the Motivation Cycle and how a little bit of productive effort leads to success which increases motivation and breeds more learning and future success.


Are You Ready for Midterms/Finals? Mentally and Physically

Date: Friday, November 13 | Time 1 – 2:30 p.m. | Location: Zoom

This Program is a hands-on wellness workshop that teaches students how to prepare themselves mentally and physically for exams.  Students will learn what types of foods improve their cognitive skills, how to keep their body fit for exams, and how to relax the mind from test anxiety.  In addition, students will learn about campus resources and quick tips on how to better prepare for exams.


Panel: What is Imposter Syndrome?

It is not uncommon to sometimes feel like you don’t belong, doubt your major, or even question if college is right for you. Hear from our EOP College Student and Alumni panel (Joseph, Daria, Debbie, and David) who also experienced variations of what is often considered “Impostor Syndrome,” and how they navigated to a more purposeful and “passionate” space throughout their academic careers!


The Importance of a Good Letter of Recommendation

As part of your college journey, you begin to develop your professional self for that upcoming scholarship, internship, or job. Part of this process is asking others to write about you in a way that highlights the best version of you. In this workshop, we will go over WHO you should ask, WHEN you should ask, and WHAT components make a good letter of recommendation.  It is not the quantity that is written about you but the quality.

The purpose of the Growth Zone Game Nights event is to provide a welcoming space for EOP students to stay connected to the program and university, as well as to make new friends while engaging in fun, friendly and competitive games. Students will have access to GZ Mentors at the end of the program to field questions and connect them to program resources, e.g. Counselor, FA support, OSD services, etc.
