 EMAIL MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT COVINO
  August 31, 2020

 Dear President’s Leadership Team,

  1. I spoke at Convocation about our success admitting and recruiting new African American students to Cal State LA.  Now that our semester is under way, I am able to share some numbers.   As of today, we have 469 African American students enrolled, compared to 292 enrolled in Fall 2019, an over 60% increase.  Again, many thanks to all who were instrumental in our achieving this gratifying result. I’m copying the Chairs in the College of Ethnic Studies, whose faculty are among those who have, to their credit, pressed this issue, and in that way helped us to become an even more welcoming and inclusive campus.

  1. The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked Cal State LA #4 in the country among “Colleges With the Greatest Racial and Ethnic Diversity Among Faculty Members.”  We have long known that we have the most racially and ethnically diverse faculty in the CSU, and this national recognition certainly adds to that distinction.

  1. Many thanks to Margaret Garcia and her team, who assisted the Provost and me in advising students who wrote to us asking to be admitted into an already full class. These inquiries afforded me a nice opportunity to be in touch with a number of students, and to work closely with Margaret to see that they all received assistance.

Best wishes,

Bill
