Academic Senate Staff Senator Election 2022

Thank you to our staff colleagues who have submitted their nominations for serving on the Academic Senate as a Senator. Below are their candidate statements to help you evaluate your choice for selection. Voting is being held August 30, 2022 – September 8, 2022 through the HRM system.


Mario Galarza

Department: Office of the VP, Admin & Finance

Statement: I'm nominating Mario Galarza for the Staff Senator position because of his dedication to the mission of the University and his knowledge and expertise of the campus community as both an alumni of the University and a long-time staff member. Mario is a hard-working, passionate individual who believes in the power of education to uplift his community. I believe that he would be a perfect representative of the needs and priorities of the staff community at the University, a responsible and dedicated member of the Senate, and a valuable asset to the Senate's work and mission.


Paula Van

Department: Facilities, Planning, Design and Construction

Statement: As someone who is invested in the well-being of our staff and faculty, I nominate myself for staff senator. My years of experience as confidential office support will provide valuable insight to the Academic Senate. I have an interest in the well-being of our faculty and staff and I am committed to transparency and developing better, more comfortable workspaces. I also would like to advocate for better work/life balance for all faculty and staff and more power in addressing the needs of the campus community. There are many things at the university we need to upgrade, such as policies and processes and I am committed to bringing these much needed changes to the university.


Carolyn Aguayo

Department: College of Professional and Global Education

Statement: It would be an honor to serve as a Staff Senator in the Cal State LA Academic Senate. My interest in this position is to serve Cal State LA in an even greater capacity by participating in the process to promote academic excellence among faculty, students, and staff. As a proud graduate of Cal State LA, and now a staff member, I have come full circle. As a communication professional, I know the importance of conversation, planning, and implementation in order to move initiatives and change forward. I am eager to contribute in any way I can to help Cal State LA sustain and grow its academic footprint locally and nationally. By representing Cal State LA staff in the Academic Senate I aim to reflect their interest in successful academic policy matters that strengthen all who work and learn on campus.
