agency services preschoolers between the ages of 3 to 5 years old at 21 sites
from East Los Angeles to West Covina and La Puente. Most of the family
serviced are bilingual and includes a full spectrum of autistic and pervasive
developmental delay disorders. The agency is currently in need of
Chinese-speaking (any dialect), Vietnamese-speaking, and naturally
Spanish-speaking interns and volunteers.

As part of the state's juvenile justice system, the CYA works closely
with law enforcement, the courts, prosecutors, probation, and a broad
spectrum of public and private agencies concerned with and involved in
the problems of youth. They provide a range of education, treatment, and
training services for youthful offenders committed by courts; direct
these offenders to participate in community and victim restoration; assist
local justice agencies with efforts to control crime and delinquency;

Children of the Night is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization
founded in 1979. They are dedicated to assisting children between the ages of 11
and 17 who are forced to prostitute on the streets for food and a place to
sleep. Since 1979 they have rescued more than 10,000 girls and boys from
prostitution and the domination of vicious pimps. More than 80 percent of these
children have remained off the streets. They provide counseling, residential services, referrals to
medical and mental health services, case management, education. Short term

Chinatown Service Center is the largest community-based Chinese American
health and human service organization in Southern California. With a focus on
Los Angeles County, CSC offers a range of services through six departments.
These are (1) Social Service, (2) Counseling, (3) Family Health, (4) Community
Economic Development, (5) Workforce Development, and (6) Youth Development.
Services are available in a variety of Chinese dialects, including Cantonese,

This project, established in December 1993, addresses three of the most underlying causes of the rise in gangs and gang violence: lack of educational opportunities for youth at-risk or currently involved with gangs; alienation of at-risk youth from productive community involvement; and the failure of public policies to support alternatives to suppression of gang violence prevention. Through grass-roots collaboration, capacity-building within communities, and partnerships with local residents, multicultural community organizations, government and University, the GBVP has been able to develop effective initiatives within its target communities of East Los Angeles, Pico Union/Westlake, and South Central Los Angeles. The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), which was founded in 1987, is
a cutting edge organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive
health, and non-violence. In all spheres, FMF utilizes research and
action to empower women economically, socially, and politically. The
organization believes that feminists - both women and men, girls and
boys - are the majority, but this majority must be empowered. To carry
out these aims, FMF engages in research and public policy development,
public education programs, grassroots organizing projects, leadership
training and development programs, and participates in and organizes
forums on issues of women's equality and empowerment. Their sister
organization, the Feminist Majority, engages in lobbying and other
direct political action, pursuing equality between women and men through

LAUL has expanded it's programs to include comprehensive services, placement and training to meet the needs of "at-risk" youth, skilled semi-skilled and disadvantaged adults, displaced workers, older workers, small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Currently the League operates (16) programs, ten (10) offering classroom training in academic skills development and job-specific vocational training. Volunteers of America began services in
Los Angeles in 1896. In 1930 the need for a rest stop for itinerant workers
brought the opening of a reading room that later became the Men's Service
Center. Also, that same year a local Christian mission turned over their entire
operation to Volunteers of America.
Today, the affiliate provides Early Head Start and Head Start services,
childcare, low income family housing, youth drug and delinquency prevention,
Upward Bound and Talent Search, housing and outreach for runaway youth, alcohol
and other drug detoxification and recovery services, housing for the homeless,
re-entry services for ex-offenders, elderly housing and home-delivered meals.

This agency receives more than 2,000 requests for assistance every day, serves more than 1,300 meals every day, provides housing for over 650 people every day, provides the only medical clinic in the central city (and will soon house the only TB control unit in the region), provides the only mental health crisis intervention clinic in the region, offers small group and one-on-one tutoring in basic literacy and life skills, offers its clients workshops that address the barriers to employment faced by individuals who are homeless, provides transportation tokens for its clients in order to get to job interviews and other appointments.
