Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies

Assistant Professor with a focus on Central American Studies

Starting Date:

August, 2022

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Ethnic Studies, Central American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, or Latin American Studies, or a relevant discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/18/2022).
2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
3) Evidence of scholarly activities in the area of Central American Studies.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Evidence of research and teaching focused on Central American communities from a transnational, diasporic, relational, or comparative lens. Specific areas of Central American studies include, but are not limited to: sociopolitical history, cultural production, literature, the politics of memory, Indigenous migrations, sexualities, urban ethnography, or Afro-Centroamericano communities.
2) Documented experience with community-engaged research, teaching, and practice with/in Central American transnational communities.
3) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level.

Duties:

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession, and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses with a focus on the Central American, Chicana/o/x, and Latina/o/x experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students, engage with Central American community partners, actively participate in program and curriculum development including for our Central American Studies minor, and maintain an active research profile.

Salary:

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The College:

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and transnational. It currently houses three academic departments, including Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies Department, Pan-African Studies Department, and Asian and Asian American Studies Department.

The Department:

The Chicano Studies program began in the fall of 1968 with four classes.  Today, the Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies (CLS) Department offers over 150 annual course offerings. CLS has helped produce alumni who are scholars, educators, politicians, artists, health care providers, cultural workers, and more.  Our alumni, current students, and faculty continue to engage in scholarly excellence and public service, transforming Los Angeles and beyond. Our departmental identity is rooted in civic engagement, movement building, social justice, and scholarly excellence.
