Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Asian American Studies, Ethnic or Gender Studies, Disability Studies, Arts Education or a relevant discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities or closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required;
2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level;
3) Well-established record of scholarly productivity in the area of Asian American Studies;
4) Hold a tenured position at the Full Professor level.  Associate Professors who will achieve promotion to Full before the starting date (8/18/2022) will also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Clear evidence of collaborative leadership;
2) Demonstrated evidence of faculty support;
3) Evidence of academic program administration and development experience within a university structure;
4) Experience in grant writing and funding development.


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

As a senior member and chair of the department, the position assumes leadership and administrative responsibilities across all departmental functions; the successful candidate works collaboratively with tenured and tenure-track faculty, part-time faculty, staff members, plans and schedules course offerings; serves as major advisor to undergraduate majors and minors; plans and manages departmental budgets; promotes and participates in disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarly activities; provides leadership in program quality assurance and assessment; and, serves as a member of the College of Ethnic Studies Council of Chairs.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The College:

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and transnational. It currently houses three academic departments: Asian and Asian American Studies, Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies, and Pan-African Studies.

The Department:

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) is a small but vibrant academic unit. AAAS started as a BA degree program in the fall of 2004, and in May of 2019, AAAS was granted full departmental status. Last year, AAAS successfully conducted a national search and recruited two tenure-track assistant professors, our first group of new faculty members in the program’s 17-year history. Our departmental identity is rooted in community engagement, social justice education, and scholarly excellence.
