Assistant Professor, K-12 Teacher Education Generalist

Starting Date:

August. 2022

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Teacher Education or other closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, however, for appointment to the position, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/18/2022).
2) Possession of a multiple or single subject teaching credential/license (or equivalent).
3) Evidence of a minimum of three years full-time teaching experience as teacher of record in urban school environments with linguistically, culturally, racially, and economically diverse students
4) Evidence of scholarly activity related to teacher education, curriculum and pedagogy, working with linguistically, culturally, racially, and economically diverse students.
5) Evidence of successful postsecondary teaching experience at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.
6) Commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Demonstrated expertise in areas related to equity and justice-oriented frameworks in social studies teacher education.
2) Evidence of experience supervising student teachers.
3) Evidence of publications in peer reviewed scholarly journals, preferably in the areas of teacher education, curriculum, and pedagogy, and work with linguistically and culturally diverse communities.
4) Evidence of successful online teaching experience and the use of technology to support teaching and learning.
5) Documented experience developing partnerships with K-12 public schools and communities in relation to fieldwork, research, and professional development opportunities for teachers.
6) Demonstrated record of grant-writing and curriculum development.


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The Assistant Professor, K-12 Teacher Education Generalist will teach courses to undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate students in the Multiple and Single Subject Teaching Credential Programs and M.A. in Education Program, options in Bilingual/Multicultural Education, Integrated STEM, Literacy, and Early Childhood/Primary Education, maintain an active research agenda (including publications, professional presentations, and external grant proposals), model effective teaching practices, use instructional technology effectively, and participate in program development and recruitment. They will also plan and supervise fieldwork experiences, supervise student teachers, and grow and support partnerships with K-12 schools, districts, and community organizations. Additional responsibilities include serving on thesis/dissertation committees, course coordination, assisting with California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) accreditation, and engaging with faculty in the division, in the college, and across the university on initiatives in support of teacher education.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department:

The Division of Curriculum and Instruction in the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles has offerings leading to multiple subject and single subject teaching credentials, including a Bachelor’s degree integrated with dual teaching credentials (multiple subject, ed. specialist) and an added bilingual authorization in addition to several options leading to the Master of Arts Degree in Education. The courses in these offerings are designed to increase teaching effectiveness, promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and emphasize the fundamentals of educational research with application to instructional leadership for planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum.
