Graduate Assistant for the College of Business and Economics

Starting Date:

Beginning Fall semester 2016 [and on-going]

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree-seeking graduate student in any college at Cal State LA.  

Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period.  Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Preferred Qualifications:

The College of Business and Economics Student Services Center provides academic counseling and advisement to undergraduate students as well as coordinates programming components such as: Meet your Advisor Week, Orientation, Graduation workshops, Study Breaks, and other events.  The office serves an undergraduate population of approximately 4,300 majors and 400 minors through answering general academic questions, assisting with clarification of academic goals and plans, and planning programs to increase student engagement and self-directed learning.  Advising staff also work closely with other University offices to ensure students are served effectively and problems are resolved quickly.  The successful applicant must have an interest in the field of Academic Advising.  Programmatic and advising experience with undergraduate students is preferred. There may be evening and weekend hours for some events, but not on a regular basis.

Hiring Criteria:

We are looking for students who are comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with multiple responsibilities.  Registered student in a CBE graduate degree program and enrolled in classes during the time of appointment.  Strong communication skills and ability to communicate and clarify course topics and tutor undergraduate students. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  Ability to successfully relate to students in our multiethnic, multicultural environment.


Under the general supervision of the College of Business and Economics Director of Student Success and Advising, the Graduate Assistant assists with intake in the Student Services Center front desk – answers general questions and departmental emails, schedules appointments, filters student questions, determines student needs, and directs complex cases to director.   Assists and performs services as assigned which may include: maintaining and revising program websites; updating office forms; and monitoring student academic progress.  Also updates and sends communications through social media platforms; collects and analyzes data for office reports; assists advisors with programs for new and continuing students.


Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 20 hours per week.
