UWC Tutoring Services

     How To Use Our Services

The University Writing Center (UWC) is for all Cal State LA students. You can come in with any type of writing assignment at any stage of the process. We can help you understand the assignment as well as plan, organize, and revise your paper. We can even help you learn to proofread for your most common mistakes.

To get one-to-one writing assistance, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit the UWC or call (323) 343-5350 and make an appointment. Appointments last 30 minutes, and you are allowed to make three per week. Please come on time. If you are five or more minutes late, your appointment may be given to a drop-in. If you come in without an appointment, we may be able to serve you, but we can't guarantee that a tutor will be available.

Step 2: Be sure to bring the assignment and all related materials. Be prepared to tell the tutor what you want to work on during the session. You can either work at a table or at a computer. If you work on the computer, it is recommended to bring a flash drive to ensure your work is not lost. To save time, it is best to log onto a computer and open your file before the tutoring session begins.

Step 3: When you arrive for your appointment, check in at the front desk with your I.D. The first time you come in, you will be asked to fill out an information form. This information is used for statistical purposes only. You will also be given a tutor evaluation form.

It is important to check in at the desk because if you don't, neither the Writing Center nor your tutor will know you are here, and your appointment may be given away to a drop-in.

Step 4: After the session, fill out the tutor evaluation form and turn it in at the front desk. Your honest evaluation helps us give students the best possible assistance.

Step 5: You may want to stop at the desk and make a follow-up appointment.

Drop-In Information

Reminder: If you have an appointment you can be no more than 5 minutes late, or else your appointment will be given away. If you do not have a scheduled appointment and want to see a tutor, please sign the “Tutoring Drop-In Sheet” located on the front desk.

Five minutes after each half-hour, students will be notified if a tutor is available.

During busy times, you may have to wait as long as two hours, but there is still no guarantee that you will see a tutor. You may have one drop-in per day. In order to avoid the long wait, we recommend that you make an advance appointment to see a tutor on the day and time you need.

Proof of visit

There are two ways to get proof that you came to see a tutor at the University Writing Center.

Method 1: You may ask the tutor to stamp your paper after your appointment. The tutor may only stamp a hardcopy of the paper you work on during your session. Neither tutors nor front-desk staff may stamp papers after the session is over. (If you are a part of EOP, please remember to bring your blue workshop slip so the tutor can stamp it.)

Method 2: You may ask the front-desk staff to give you a printout of your appointment if you are working on a computer or forget to request a stamp from your tutor. You may request a printout of your session(s) at any time during the semester.
