Commentary and Editorial Guidelines
First person, opinion, commentary reviews and editorial submissions are always welcome at the University Times. There are only a couple of rules that govern the publication of such submissions.
- The final decision of whether or not to publish a submitted commentary or editorial rests solely with the management of the University Times.
- While we solicit and support a wide range of opinions and commentaries – especially unpopular or controversial points of view – we cannot and will not publish commentaries that may construed as hate speech or which promote hostility, violence or illegal action against any group.
- Editorial submissions must be 300 words in length. While we would never edit commentaries for their perspective or opinion, we may need to edit for clarity, style or length. In cases where significant edits must be made, we would most likely return the commentary to the person who submitted it with our recommendations. In the cases where we edit such a piece for clarity, style or length, we will endeavor to protect the position and voice of the person submitting the piece.
- Essentially any way you can get your editorial or commentary to us is acceptable: surface mail, email, personal drop-off or any other way the University Times can reasonably be expected to take possession of your editorial or commentary. See all our contacts at the bottom of this page.
- Unsigned letters, editorials, commentaries or opinions will not be published. We will only publish such materials if we can reach the writer in person and confirm that the contents of the submission reflects his or her opinion.
- Editorials or commentaries submitted to the University Times become the property of this paper and will not be returned. Also, please submit timely commentaries and editorials with sufficient time for editing and evaluation. You must not assume that you can drop off the draft of an editorial on Tuesday and expect to see it in print on Thursday.
- The opinions expressed in our letters, editorials, commentaries and opinions are those of the writer only, and should not be interpreted as the position of the University Times, Cal State LA or the California State University system, unless the editorial or commentary is unsigned and specified as an official opinion of the paper or the university, any faculty, staff, student, or officer thereof.
