UAS Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is made up of 16 voting Directors and one (1) Ex-Officio Non Voting member.

The three community directors are appointed by the University President to further diversify the make of the Board; these directors bring to the Board a wealth of practical business experience from the Los Angeles region.

The Executive Committee is composed of the Board President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer. The Secretary-Treasurer is a permanent Board position as the chief fiscal officer of Cal State L.A. Both the Board President and Vice President are elected by the Board members each year in the month of November.

The Board of Directors meet regularly once every academic quarter to discuss and set policies relating to the overall operation of UAS. The Board of Directors is subdivided into various committees, which include the Audit Committee, Executive Committee, Finance and Investment Committee, Human Resource Committee and Research Committee. Members of these committees, except the Executive Committee, are appointed by the Board President.

Ms. Lisa Chavez
is the Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer for Cal State University Los Angeles. Ms. Chavez was appointed a member of the board in September 2008. Prior to joining Cal State L.A., Ms. Chavez held positions at several different CSU locations, including CSU Dominguez Hills, Office of the Chancellor, and CSU San Marcos. Ms. Chavez has been active on many CSU system-wide finance related committees. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chico State University and an MBA from CSU Dominguez Hills.

Dr. Carlos G. Gutiérrez

Dr. Carlos G. Gutiérrez
is the University President's Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. Dr. Gutiérrez has been at Cal State LA since 1975. Re-appointed to the Board in September 2008, Dr. Gutiérrez is the faculty member representative of the Academic Senate. As a member of the faculty, he has been principal investigator or program director on $63.5 million in research and research training grants. Gutierrez and colleagues, in natural and behavioral sciences, administer extensive student research-training programs. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a 2005 Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year.

Ms. Joan Lopez

Ms. Joan Lopez  
is the Operations Supervisor at Student Financial Services.  She has worked at CSULA for over twelve (12) years as a staff and student assistant.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems in 2001 at CSULA.   She has eight (8) years of staff experience working with student service centers, including Student Information Center, University Orientation and now Student Financial Services.  She enjoys working with the campus community and has a passion for great customer service.   Her staff responsibilities include a variety of administrative, technical, and analytical duties.

Ms. Tina Mueller
has over 35 years’ experience, mostly within the oil industry, and specifically focused in procurement management and contract negotiations. She has held various leadership positions for Unocal’s Overseas Resource Management Division that allowed her to work on major exploration projects in several foreign countries, including England, the Netherlands, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Tina is fluent in multiple languages and earned her Associates of Arts, Business (1970) from Los Angeles City College.

Dr. Tony Ross
is Vice President for Student Affairs at Cal State LA. He serves as President of the UAS Board and is chairperson of the Finance and Investment Committee. Dr. Ross has been a member of the board since 2000. Tony Ross has been an active member of NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, for over 20 years. He has served as a faculty member and mentor for numerous professional and leadership organizations. Dr. Ross is also active in a number of community boards and organizations including, but not limited to, the Julian C. Dixon Advisory Board for Cultural Studies; Boyle Heights Learning Collaborative; UNITE LA Board; CSULA University Student Union Board.

Dr. Simeon P. Slovacek

Dr. Simeon P. Slovacek
joined CSULA in 1981 as Director of Institutional Research and as a faculty member in the Charter College of Education.  Prior to joining CSULA, he served as Director of Analytical Studies at Cornell University where he earned his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in the field of educational research and evaluation methodology.  Dr. Slovacek has also been an invited visiting scholar at Stanford University and the University of New Orleans.

Dr. Slovacek currently serves as Principal Investigator on an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health.   As Principal Evaluator of the Program Evaluation & Research Collaborative (PERC) office at Cal State LA, Dr. Slovacek has conducted numerous evaluations and research grants/contracts over the years.  He has evaluated evaluation projects with the California Arts Council, the Long Beach Unified School District Healthy Start program (Prop 10), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Gates Foundation, the Los Angeles Music Center Education Division, Maxine Waters Saturday Academy program (a National Aeronautics & Space Administration funded project), National Institutes of Health funded projects such as the Minority Opportunities in Research (MORE) programs at Cal State LA, the MBRS RISE (Minority Biomedical Research Support - Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) and MARC U*STAR (Minority Access to Research Careers – Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research) programs at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program at Charles Drew University, the Cancer Collaborative program at Cal State LA and City of Hope among others.  He also served as Site Director for two years on the International Social Studies University/K-12 Exploration Series (ISSUES) program funded by CSMP (California Subject Matter Project).  Dr. Slovacek was on the California Department of Education’s list of approved evaluators for the State’s Immediate Interventions for Under-performing Schools program.

He currently serves as a founding board of trustee member for nineteen start-up charter schools (serving over 6,000 children) launched by 3 non-profits.  Two of his boards are in the Los Angeles Unified School District: The Accelerated Schools Board and The Inner City Education Foundation Board.  The third board is in Pomona: The School of Arts and Enterprise Board.  He has served in various board officer capacities, such as Secretary for all 3 non-profits, Treasurer for The School of Arts and Enterprise and is former Vice President and Treasurer for The Accelerated Schools.

Dr. Dale S. Zuehls
is a CPA, JD, PhD, CFF, ABV, ACFE and is a principal in Zuehls, Legaspi & Company – a specialty accounting and consulting firm.  Dale has been in practice for over 35 years in areas of complex auditing, accounting, forensic accounting, complex tax issues, performance measurement and related consulting matters.  Dale has taught in various local University PhD and Masters programs and held several leadership positions within the Big 5 accounting environment.  Most recently, Dale was a partner in KPMG’s audit and assurance practice.  In his various leadership roles, Dale was also in charge of numerous engagements with complex forensic accounting, performance measurement and other consulting issues and has frequently been retained to conduct high profile accounting forensic engagements.

 

Board Meetings
Pursuant to State of California open meeting or sunshine laws (see Education Code Section 89920 et seq. and Government Code Section 54950 et seq. - Ralph M. Brown Act), Cal State L.A. University Auxiliary Services, Inc. (UAS) Board of Directors and its committees are required to conduct their meetings in an open forum, unless otherwise provided as a lawful exemption. Section 89921 of the Education Code states that notice of meetings shall be made available to any person so requesting, at least seven (7) calendar days before a regular meeting, or 24 hours before a special meeting. Notice of meetings and meeting agenda is available by contacting the UAS Administration Office located at the Golden Eagle Building, Rm. 314. Please note that the notices and agendas on this web page is for information purposes only. Although changes may occur, UAS will attempt to update the information as quickly as possible. The viewer should refer to this page from time to time for updates. On August 22, 1997, the UAS Board of Directors unanimously adopted its UAS Sunshine Guide as an official reference manual for conducting open meetings.
