EOP Celebrates
Native American History Month

On October 27, 2006, Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles, celebrated the American Indian Heritage Month. Among the participants were two members of the California State University Los Angeles American Indian Student Council (AISC) and Pathfinders, Miki Martinez (Navajo) and Karris Wilson (Quechan).Miki and Karris are Educational Opportunity Program Student Leadership Advisors. The AISC and the Pathfinders are housed in the office of counselor Bob Baker- EOP Counselor (Student Affairs, Room 203).As members of the American Indian Student Council (AISC) Miki and Karris reflect on their humble backgrounds and share with the campus community the American Indian way of life, its culture, tradition and food. They also participate in various community meetings, functions, and events in the Southern California area. Thus, they are in an ideal position to determine and provide the necessary assistance regarding higher education as deemed needed by members of the community-at-large. As Pathfinder Team member they work within the community -at -large and provides higher education information to students and their parents. They offer assistance, mentoring and make referrals on EOP outreach, admission and retention. In addition, they offer information on university orientation, registration, financial aid, academic support programs and other university processes and procedures. Both Miki and Karris primary concern is to assist those students who are less fortunate than they are.
