Latin Grammy award-winner Lila Downs to perform on Saturday, Sept. 22, 8 p.m., at the Luckman Theatre on the CSULA campus.
According to Wendy Baker, executive director of the Luckman Complex, ÂThe 2012-2013 season at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex is unmatched by any other arts entity in the area in its diversity and caliber.Â
In its 19th season, the Luckman Complex will kick off with a dynamic performance by Mexican singer and composer Lila Downs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22. A Latin Grammy Award-winner, Downs has created one of the most singular explorations of Mexican roots music; and in the process has become one of the most internationally-renowned music artists. Also performing with Downs will be special guests, Las Cafeteras, who will share the magic of folk music from Southern Veracruz.
ÂDowns arrival on campus is certain to be a highlight of my tenure at the Luckman thus far, and will be an evening that celebrates the beautiful cultural mèlange that makes up our wonderful city, said Baker.
On the same weekend, the Luckman Gallery will also open with Jennifer BolandeÂs Landmarks, the first critical survey exhibition spanning three decades of her work in a wide array of media. Integrating aspects of dance with pictures led her to constructed images, photo-objects, sculpture and installations. This exhibition, curated by Nicholas Frank, originated at the Institute of Visual Arts (Inova) in Milwaukee, and traveled to the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Philadelphia. The opening reception is set for Friday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m.
ÂBolandeÂs techniques of employing found photographs and fashioning object/image amalgams have become increasingly familiar across contemporary art practices, said Jason Nisbet of Art Forum.
In addition to a stellar line-up of international headliners, the new season will feature a tribute series by the Luckman Jazz Orchestra (LJO) to influential jazz musicians. The tributes will include music by Kenny Dorham featuring jazz vocalist Barbara Morrison, Jimmy Heath featuring jazz vocalist Carmen Lundy, and LJO featuring jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves.
Conducted by Charles Owens, the 20-member LJO has been cited in international and national press as innovative and cutting edge. Owens is recognized as a world-class sax and flute player.
Bringing once-in-a-lifetime experiences and artists from all over the globe to Los Angeles, the Luckman Complex furthers its mission of presenting the best of world-class arts to a diverse community. Since 1994, the Luckman has featured the best in international and local music, dance, theatre and visual art.
ÂThe Luckman is a bridge for the campus community to the global arts community, and for the Greater Los Angeles community to the campus community, added Baker. ÂBeing the host of the catalyst that brings these worlds together is an honor that I am proud to spearhead.Â
Jennifer BolandeÂs ÂLandmarks will be on display at the Luckman Gallery from Sept. 22 to Dec. 15.
