This yearÂs G.E. Honors Program incoming freshmen Jonathan Tran and Filomena Pirrone are both examples of the caliber of students already at Cal State L.A.
A pre-nursing major, Tran graduated among the top of his class at San Gabriel High School. He was a semi-finalist for the Los Renombrados Award, the highest and most recognized award given at his high school. He was also a member of Peer Counselor, the Yes I Can club, and the volleyball and varsity swim teams. With interest in photography, his works were exhibited at the Chinese American Museum in downtown Los Angeles and are now on permanent display at his high schoolÂs library. He also volunteers for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, at a local animal shelter called Beagles and Buddies, and at the Alderwood Manor Convalescent Hospital in San Gabriel.
Tran said, ÂI selected Cal State L.A. for its excellent nursing program. Also, I was awarded the PresidentÂs Scholarship, which practically gives me a full ride through college.Â
A nutritional science major, Pirrone graduated as valedictorian of Pasadena High School. She was a member of the Math Club, National Honors Society, and varsity girls water polo and swim teams. She also served as a copy editor for her high schoolÂs newspaper and yearbook. Her accolades include an AP Scholar with Distinction, California Federation Sealbearer, Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, Varsity Water Polo Most Dedicated 2010, and Varsity Girls Swim Team Most Dedicated 2009. In her community, she has been active on the Sierre Madre Police Chief Community Advisory Board and was honored as a Sierre Madre Rose Float Princess.
With a career goal of helping to make others healthier and contribute to their overall well-being, Pirrone said, ÂI chose Cal State L.A. because of it being in Los Angeles, being close to home, and having one of the best nutritional science programs.ÂVideoclips of other outstanding students from the 2010 cohort of the G.E.
