Representing the Republic of Turkey, Cal State L.A.Âs student delegation brought home two major awards from this yearÂs National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York.
They received the ÂOutstanding Position Papers and ÂDistinguished Delegation awards. Out of more than 300 colleges and universities, only 32 schools were awarded Outstanding Position Papers and 24 schools were awarded Distinguished Delegation.
The CSULA student delegation comprised of 21 students from Professor Emily AcevedoÂs ÂComparative Politics (Political Science 454). The students are listed on the sidebar by committees.
Acevedo, faculty advisor for the CSULA MUN, explained, ÂThis is a very challenging class that requires a high level of commitment and passion from students. Â I am privileged to have such dedicated students who put so much of their heart into this class. Our students represented Cal State L.A. with dignity and style, and I am honored to be their professor.Â
The National MUN is sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association.

Going beyond the classroom for political science lesson
Eight members of the CSULA Political Science Association (PSA)Âa student club composed of political science undergraduate and graduate studentsÂrecently traveled to Sacramento to study the state legislature, and then to San Francisco to attend the annual Western Political Science Association conference.
Accompanied by Professor Taylor Dark of the Political Science department, the PSA students attended six state legislature staff meetings at the State Capitol. The group also met with Henry Castillo, a recent CSULA political science graduate who is now working as a prestigious Senate Fellow in the Capital Fellows Program, one of the oldest and most distinguished service learning programs in the country.
At the Western Political Association conference, CSULA students attended panels on energy policy, civil rights policy, and gender representation in politics. During the conference, they also interacted with CSULA political science faculty and other academic political scientists from across the country.
ÂThe trip provided an excellent exposure to both day-to-day life in the state legislature, and to the content and style of an academic conference, said faculty advisor Dark.
