Former Cal State L.A. track star and fresh graduate Desi Burt will represent the VS Athletics Track Club as he competes against 16 top U.S. athletes in the men’s decathlon at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 25-28 in Eugene, Oregon.
The USA Championships feature the nation’s finest professional track and field athletes competing for national honors and spots on the Team USA roster for the 2009 International Association of Athletics Federations World Outdoor Championships Aug. 15-23 in Berlin, Germany. Burt qualified for the nationals with a combined mark of 7646.
Burt said, “I am looking forward to competing in the USA national championships. It gives me the opportunity to make a world team and also to gain some experience competing against the best decathletes in the world.”
At Cal State L.A., Burt was a four-time All-American in the high jump and two-time National Collegiate Athletic Association West Region Athlete of the Year. He was also the 2008 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Year. He accounted for 50 points in the 2008 CCAA Championships competing in seven individual events. That same year, he was also a member of the Cal State L.A.’s winning 4x400 relay team.
Burt graduated this spring at Cal State L.A. with a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation services. He said, “My future goal is to win an Olympics medal. With hard work and faith in God, I believe anything is possible. I was fortunate to choose a school like Cal State L.A. that has great coaches and very supportive athletic faculty members. I do not know where I would be without all the help and support that my teammates, faculty, and coaches have shown.”
