Symposium to feature pre-Columbian art exhibit from a rarely seen private collection
What: Cal State L.A.’s Art History Society presents the 2015 Mesoamerican Symposium, “In the Realm of the Vision Serpent: Decipherments and Discoveries in Mesoamerica.” The symposium will feature leading scholars in the field, as well as an exhibit of rarely displayed pre-Columbian works of art.
Who: The symposium is dedicated to the life and work of Linda Schele, a renowned scholar of Maya art and writing. Schele, who passed away in 1988, was a leader in the effort to decode Maya hieroglyphics and made lasting contributions to the field of Mesoamerican studies. Symposium speakers include: David Stuart, of the University of Texas at Austin; Mary Miller, of Yale University; Karl Taube, of the University of California at Riverside; Manuel Aguilar, of Cal State L.A., and others.
When: Friday, April 10, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, April 11, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Golden Eagle Ballroom at Cal State L.A.
More: The accompanying art exhibit, “Eternal Realms of Revelry: The MAW Collection of Pre-Columbian Art,” features nearly 100 ceramic figures and vessels on display for the first time in Los Angeles. The artifacts were acquired over the last 30 years by a Los Angeles-area collector. The exhibit is curated by John Pohl, of Cal State L.A., and will be displayed April 10 through May 2 at the University’s Fine Arts Gallery in the Fine Arts Building. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
