A delegation of Cal State LA students received an honorable mention at the annual National Model United Nations conference in New York.
“We represented the Republic of Colombia and sat on 13 different committees,” said Cal State LA Professor Emily Acevedo, faculty adviser for the Cal State LA delegation. “Fewer than 10 percent of the schools that participated were recognized. Way to go, Cal State LA!”
Sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association, the Model United Nations is an annual conference that challenges students to engage in a simulation of the United Nations with other colleges and universities serving as delegates of designated countries.
During the conference, Cal State LA history major Pedro Vazquez was awarded Outstanding Position Paper. Biochemistry major Kryls Domalaon and biology major Josseline Gonzalez Garcia were named Outstanding Delegates in Committee.
Andrés Eloy Martin, a communications major, said participating in the Model UN was one of the greatest experiences of his life.
“The amount that I learned and the bonds that I have made because of the Model UN are priceless and well worth the work and effort that I put into preparing and researching for this experience,” said Martin. “My research, public speaking, and overall communication skills have all improved significantly due to the interactions and cooperation that was necessary in order to delegate effectively with other students from around the world.”
For political science major I’Jazz Brooks, the conference demonstrated that international collaboration and peace are possible.
“The conference allowed me to cooperate with people from around the world and develop comprehensive solutions to some of the world's most pressing issues,” Brooks said. “I recommend this conference to anyone who is interested in honing their intellectual talents and cultivating their skills in communication and critical thinking.”
