Cal State LA was recognized by the White House for its success in informing students about affordable health insurance.
The White House Healthy Campus Challenge aimed to engage colleges and universities nationwide in promoting the open enrollment period for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. The challenge was an initiative of former President Barack Obama.
Cal State LA was one of 60 campuses selected to attend Healthy Campus Challenge Day at the White House. Professor Walter Zelman and students from the University’s Public Health Student Association, Jessica Chavez and Giovanna Manson Hing, participated in the event.
“We were glad that Cal State LA was recognized for having assisted students and the community around our campus in learning
about their options to have health insurance under the Affordable Care Act,” said Zelman, who also chairs the Department of Public Health at Cal State LA. “This honor highlights Cal State LA’s commitment to engagement, service and the public good.”
More than 350 campuses from all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico participated in the challenge.
As part of the Healthy Campus project, Cal State LA sent emails to every student and to more than 100 community organizations. The email included a phone number and instructions for scheduling an enrollment appointment with representatives of AltaMed, which is partnering with the University on this project. AltaMed is a healthcare provider. Open enrollment in Covered California closes on Jan. 31.
