Cal State LA student Angela Madira is one of 36 future leaders chosen for a prestigious Cambridge University Scholarship, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Angela Madira, a biochemistry major at California State University, Los Angeles, has recently been awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship for her outstanding academic achievement and social leadership.
Madira is one of only 36 students in the nation to be selected for the 2017 class of Gates Cambridge Scholars. She is also the first millennial (born in 2000) Gates Cambridge Scholar.
Madira will start her M.Phil. in Health, Medicine and Society at the University of Cambridge in England in the fall. Her doctoral dissertation will focus on the efficacy and ethics of existing mammalian research models. She hopes to target the philosophy of cognitive psychology through the multispecies interactions between humans and animals, particularly scientists and their test subjects.
Named an Amgen Scholar in 2015, Madira spent a summer conducting research at the Harvard Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology. Madira’s first paper is scheduled to be published soon. It is based on clinical research at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital on the removal of dermoid cysts.
An Honors College student, Madira will graduate from Cal State LA with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry this May. Her goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon.
The Gate Cambridge Scholarship was established through a $210 million donation to the University of Cambridge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000. Since the first class in 2001, there have been more than 1,600 Gates Cambridge Scholars from 104 countries who represent more than 600 universities globally.
The class of 2017 future leaders will join current Gates Cambridge Scholars in October to form a community of approximately 220 scholars in residence at the world-leading University of Cambridge.
