Gay Yuen is First Chinese Faculty Member to Serve As Cal State L.A.’s Grand Marshal at Undergraduate Commencement Cal State L.A. Undergraduate Ceremony is Saturday, June 11

Los Angeles, CA – As Grand Marshal, Gay Quai-Ming Yuen, professor in the Charter College of Education at California State University, Los Angeles, will lead the colorful academic processions of the University’s 58th Commencement ceremonies: the Master’s Hooding Ceremony on Friday, June 10, 5:30 p.m. and the Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, June 11, at 8 a.m. She will be the first Chinese faculty member to be accorded this honor.

A member of the faculty since 1989, Dr. Yuen is an expert in bilingual education, second language development, and minority education. She directs the Pacific Rim Institute of the Charter College of Education, which promotes and supports programs that encourage Asian and Asian American educational research. She frequently consults with educational agencies in Asia, working in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and the Pacific Islands, as an expert on minority education, multicultural education and teacher education.

Cal State L.A.’s Undergraduate Commencement will take place on Saturday, June 11, 2005 in the University’s Athletic Stadium beginning at 8 a.m. Speaker will be Antonia Hernández, president and CEO of the California Community Foundation—one of the largest and most active philanthropic organizations in Southern California—and former president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). The University will hold a separate Master’s Hooding Ceremony on the previous evening, Friday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m.
