Cal State L.A.’s Nursing Graduate Program
Receives Top National Ranking

Los Angeles, CA – U.S. News and World Report 2005 “America’s Best Graduate Schools” edition has ranked Cal State L.A.’s nursing master’s degree program among the top in the nation. Cal State L.A. is one of only three—along with UCLA and USC—in the Los Angeles area, and the top-ranked CSU campus leading CSU San Diego and CSU San Francisco on the list.

U.S.News says its “rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. Scores for each school were determined by computing a trimmed mean (eliminating the two highest and lowest responses) of the ratings of all respondents who rated that school; scores were then sorted in descending order. Those schools with the highest average appear here.”

In the fall of 2002, surveys were conducted for 2003 rankings of master’s programs in nursing accredited by either the Commission on Collegiate Nursing or the National League for Nursing Accredited Commission. All of the peer assessment surveys were conducted by the market research firm, Synovate.

The Cal State L.A. nursing program has been in existence as a department since the late 1960s and has been a unit in the College of Health and Human Services since its inception. The School of Nursing comprises about 1,000 pre-nursing majors, nearly 300 undergraduate nursing students, nearly 100 graduate students and 24 full-time faculty members. CSULA nursing programs are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and received continuing eight-year accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

Since 2000, when it began surveying nursing graduate programs, U.S. News and World Report has listed Cal State L.A.’s nursing graduate program among the top five programs in California and the highest ranked CSU system School of Nursing. Judith Papenhausen, a nursing faculty member at Cal State L.A. since 1972, directs the School.
