Los Angeles, CA -- July 2, 1996 -- On July 27, 28 and
August 3 -7, 1996, California State University, Los Angeles
will host The 34th Annual Southwestern Youth Music Festival
(SYMF). More than 3,100 students from private music studios of
the 387 teacher-members of SYMF will be auditioning at this year's
Auditions will be held simultaneously from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in
twelve separate rooms at the CSLA Music Building. These auditions
are open to the public and may be attended free of charge. In
addition, on each day there will be Award Programs featuring performances
by the first place winners from various categories such as Piano,
Voice, Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Viola and Cello.
Of special interest this year are the orchestral performances
and Master Classes which are also free to the public. On Sunday,
July 28, Ann Diener, principal flutist of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, will conduct a Master Class in flute at 2 p.m. in
the Chorale Room. On Monday, August 5, at 2 p.m., Sidney Weiss,
former concert-master of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will conduct
a Master Class in violin at 2 p.m. in the Band Room. Also
on Monday, August 5, American Composer Seymour Bernstein
will hold a "New Materials" session on new music he
has composed for the piano at 10 a.m. in the Music Hall and at
2 p.m. he will conduct a Master Class on his piano compositions.
Marking the premier performance of the SYMF Baroque Chamber Orchestra,
first place winners in the Young Baroque Musician categories will
perform at 4:15 p.m. in the Music Hall under the direction of
Francis Steiner, conductor for the South Bay Chamber Orchestra
and the Carson-Dominguez Hills Symphony.
The festival's finale will take place on Wednesday, August 7 with
a special program by Young Chamber Musician winners and performances
by Showcase Recital winners who have been chosen from the Open
and Young Musician categories. The highlight of the evening will
be the 8 p.m. Festival Orchestra performance under the direction
of Dr. Steiner. The winners presented will perform various concert
