Street Level Exhibition Opens on October 28 at
Cal State L.A.

Featuring local artists Roger Marshutz, Sandra Varos, Daniel
Trevino and Bernardo

Los Angeles, California -- October 24, 1996 -- From
October 28 through November 21, the Fine Arts Gallery at
California State University, Los Angeles will display Street
, an exhibition that focuses on the more overlooked
people and objects found on the city streets. This show features
works by Los Angeles artists Roger Marshutz, Sandra
, Daniel Trevino, and Bernardo. Although
traditional art materials are used in some of the imagery, the
resultant art works are definitely unusual and non-traditional.
A reception will take place on Saturday, November 2 from 3-5
p.m. and the artists' talk will be on Tuesday, November 12 at
6 p.m.

Roger Marshutz is a nationally recognized photographer. His
current work features photographs of homeless individuals or gang
members. Each photograph includes an interview with the subject
played through a small tape recorder. This technique adds a personal
dimension to each subject and brings that person into the art
gallery. These are the visages and voices of marginalized populations,
often seen but rarely heard.

Sandra Varos, Daniel Trevino and Bernardo are local artists who
work and exhibit collectively under the name "Three Friends."
For this exhibition they have retrieved furniture, trash and
other objects abandoned on the streets of Los Angeles. This detritus
is recombined into new sculpture and aesthetic compositions.
Like the photographic work of Roger Marshutz, this work draws
attention to elements always present in the city, but rarely noticed
or contemplated. The exhibit is curated by Ed Forde, professor
of Art at Cal State L.A.
