Social Science Database Archive
at Cal State L.A. is Now Online

Los Angeles, CA-The Social Science Database Archive (SSDBA), located in the office of Analytical Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, is now accessible online at . It is a data specialty center established in 1991 for the support of faculty research and instruction in the social sciences throughout the California State University (CSU) system.

The SSDBA is an ever-expanding collection of social science-related research studies. Currently, there are over 900 data sets available. The archive acquires the majority of its holdings from the following sources: the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Science at the University of Michigan; the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at the University of Connecticut; the Field-Institute-California Field Poll, San Francisco, California; and the United States Census Bureau.

As the CSU system-wide clearinghouse for social science data, the SSDBA acquires, documents, stores and preserves data files for use in secondary analysis by students, staff and faculty. In addition, the SSDBA offers introductory workshops to the archive.

The SSDBA is funded in part by the Chancellor's Office and in part by subscriptions from individual campuses. Located at Cal State L.A., the SSDBA staff provides data services to subscribing campuses. The staff members include Anthony Hernandez, director; Nancy Kudo-Hombo, fiscal manager; and Gladys Chamberlain, administrative support assistant.

In addition, each subscribing campus has a designated campus user liaison to provide on-campus support to archive users. Also, there is a Social Science Research and Instructional Council (SSRIC) representative at each campus. The SSRIC functions as an advisory board to the SSDBA. A list of campus liaisons and SSRIC representatives can be found on the SSDBA web site.
