in the Sunrayce 97 Western Regional Qualifier
Los Angeles, CA -- May 6, 1997 --- The Cal State L.A. Solar Eagle III placed first at the Sunrayce 97 Western Regional Qualifier held recently in Mesa, Arizona, with a qualifying mileage of 273.60 for a total of 152 laps. This preliminarily positions Solar Eagle III second in the starting order for the exciting Sunrayce 97 in June, following George Washington University whose solar car placed first in the Eastern Regional Qualifier with a qualifying mileage of 276.86 for a total of 127 laps.
Solar Eagle III -- the University's third student-built, solar-powered vehicle -- is the only university entry from the City of Los Angeles in the upcoming Sunrayce 97, the nation's only collegiate solar-powered electric car race sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, EDS, and General Motors. The University's first two solar cars won 4th and 3rd place, respectively, in the 1990 Sunrayce USA and in Sunrayce 93.
Sunrayce 97, a nine-day race from June 19-June 28, will cover a 1,200 mile cross-country route from Indianapolis, Indiana to Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a participant in this event, Solar Eagle III will be competing against 40 universities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
