Los Angeles, CA -- Who was Saint Nicholas and how did he become Santa? Dr. Steven Jones, chair and professor of English at California State University, Los Angeles, can trace the influence of pagan deities in the development of the jolly old Saint Nick legend and discuss other myths and folk legends associated with this midwinter celebration.
Professor Jones, a specialist in folklore, fairy tales and folk tales in American literature, earned his Ph.D. in English and folklore at UC Davis. His book, Folklore and Literature in the United States, was named ÂChoice Outstanding BookÂ in 1984. He is the author of The New Comparative Method and a book on Snow White tales published in 1990. His book, The Fairy Tale: The Magic Mirror of Imagination, was published in 1995. He is past president of the California Folklore Society.
