The Eliason Merit Award is presented annually to individuals who have contributed significantly toward strengthening relations between the United States and Sweden in the areas of commerce, science or the arts. The award has been named in honor of the late Sven A. Eliason, who through his great contributions to many Swedish-American causes exemplified the requirements for this award.
Ã ke Sandler is a writer, journalist and a longtime supporter of Swedish-American causes in the United States. He has worked many years as a journalist, both in Sweden and the United States, writing for several daily papers including Stockholm's Tidningen, New York Times and Los Angeles Times. He also worked for many magazines in the United States and Sweden including Time and Life Magazine, Western Political Quarterly, Idun, Vi, Ã ret Runt, and Veckojournalen.
Sandler has been an active member of The Swedish Club of Los Angeles, The American-Scandinavian Foundation in Los Angeles, The Swedish-American Cultural Society, and Studi-fÃ¶rbundet NÃ¤ringsliv och SamhÃ¤lle in Los Angeles.
In 1976, the Swedish King conferred the Royal Order of the North Star on Sandler and, in 1983, Sandler received the Swedish Council of America's Merit Award at a ceremony in Chicago. The American-Scandinavian Foundation in Los Angeles chose Ã ke Sandler and his wife, Jane, as Scandinavians of the Year in 1991.
Sandler started teaching at Cal State L.A. in 1949 until his retirement in 1980. He received his Ph.D. in political science from University of California, Los Angeles.
