PEOPLE: Experts on Smoking --- A recently released study by the Harvard School of Public Health and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association announced a 28% increase in smoking among college students in the last four years. Cal State L.A. has experts available to speak to the media on the concerns about this increase in smoking and other health-related issues. Listed below are two professors and a staff member at Cal State L.A. with such expertise.

Carlton Blanton
Professor of Health Science; B.A., M.A., Cal State L.A.; Ed.D., USC
Dr. Blanton is an expert in health and safety, substance abuse education and prevention, and occupational health and safety. He has presented numerous lectures and published many articles related to his areas of expertise. Blanton has been an active member of the Association of Allied Health Professionals, The American Red Cross, American Biographical Research Institute, and American Society of Safety Engineers. He is listed in Who's Who in the United States.

Behjat A. Sharif
Associate Professor of Health Science; Ph.D., Texas Women's University; Certified Mediator; Certified Divorce Mediator
Dr. Sharif's expertise incorporates different facets of health education, including stress, drugs, health promotion and disease prevention and international health. She also specializes in relationships of stress, interpersonal conflict, drug abuse and violent behavior, as well as health issues involving impoverished minorities, women and international students.

Jeffrey Tipton
Acting Director and Medical Chief of Staff, Student Health Center, Cal State L.A.
Dr. Tipton is responsible for identifying student health and counseling needs, and providing leadership in the development and maintenance of student health programs at Cal State L.A. Dr. Tipton earned his undergraduate degree in biology from San Diego State University, his Master of Public Health from UCLA, and his medical education from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He received training in internal medicine and occupational medicine at USC and in preventive medicine at UCLA, where he was chief resident. Dr. Tipton is board certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
