Expert on Referendums and Initiatives--- With the recent Primary Election, there have been concerns whether California voters should have the opportunity to vote on propositions that have been written initially as laws by the California Legislature. Cal State L.A. has a faculty expert available to speak to the media about the law-making process, referendums and initiatives.
John M. Allswang, emeritus professor of History at Cal State L.A., received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Allswang is an expert on 20th century U.S. history, American and California voting (initiatives and referendums) and ethnic politics. He has authored several books on politics, including California Initiatives and Referendums, The New Deal and American Politics and Bosses, Machines & Urban Voters. His book, The Initiative and Referendum in California, 1898-1998, will be published by Stanford University Press this year.
