AT LUCKMAN THEATRE FEBRUARY 25
Peggy Baker, a dancer of startling power and fascination. Andrew
Burashko, a pianist of fervor and refinement. Together they appear
in music for piano and solo dancer at Cal State
L.A.'s Luckman Theatre on Sunday, February 25
at 4 p.m.
Dynamic contemporary dance combined with some of the most glorious
works written for piano bring breathtaking new dimension to the
tradition of recital performance in music for piano and solo
dancer. The program to be presented at Luckman Theatre features
some of Ms. Baker's most acclaimed works including a visual embodiment
of John Cage's serene In a Landscape and Brute,
a startling and provocative counterpart to Serge Prokofiev's monumental
Sonata no. 6 in A major, op. 82.
Peggy Baker who began her career in 1974 as a founding member,
and later Artistic Director of Toronto's Dancemakers, was a featured
dancer in Lar Lubovith's New York company throughout the eighties
and an inaugural member of Michail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance
Project. She mader her debut as a solo artist at the 1990 Festivalof
Canadian Modern Dance (Winnipeg). Peggy Baker/Solo Dance has been
presented throughout Canada, Europe and the United States. Her
repertoire is composed of her own choreography and works by leading
Canadian and American creators including James Kudelka, Molissa
Fenly and Mark Morris.
Russian born pianist Andrew Burashko has performed as soloist
and chamber player throughout Canada and Europe. He appeared with
the Toronto Symphony four times before reaching his twenty first
birthday and has also played with the Hamilton Philharmonic and
the Vancouver Symphony orchestras. He has performed in concert
with noted musicians James Sommerville, Scott St. John, Robert
Aitken, Fides Krucker and Steven Dann. Burashko has also played
under conductors Andrew Davis, Victor Feldbrill and John Williams.
He is currently a faculty member at the Royal Conservatory of
Music in Toronto.
Baker and Burashko have performed together since 1991, premiering
music for piano and solo dancer for the Vancouver Recital
Society in 1993.
Luckman Theatre, part of the Luckman Fine Arts Complex, is located
on the California State University, Los Angeles campus at the
