| L.A. Symphonic Camerata at Cal State L.A. Los Angeles, CA - May 6, 1999 -- The Los Angeles Symphonic Camerata, a professional ensemble in residence at California State University, Los Angeles, has been awarded a grant of $14,000 by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department for the 1999-2000 concert season. The Camerata, established in 1997, serves the needs of gifted instrumentalists from Cal State L.A. and other universities, colleges and conservatories in the country who are establishing their own professional performance careers. It was created through the cooperative efforts of the Cal State L.A. School of Arts and Letters, the Department of Music, the International Institute of Music Los Angeles and many dedicated individuals. During the next concert season, the Camerata will award tickets to junior high and high schools with exceptional music programs, to benefit their schools' fund-raising efforts. The tickets will be sold by students for two specific concerts of the Camerata. All proceeds will go to the schools' music programs with bus transportation to and from the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex on the Cal State L.A. campus being provided to all parents and friends who purchase these tickets from the students. This outreach program aims to promote family participation in live concert attendance, said Camerata founder and music director David Buck, professor of music at Cal State L.A. "The Camerata's performances are the product of highly talented, enthusiastic, and dedicated young professionals. It will continue to provide a consistent experience for musicians and audiences in a fine concert hall in this major city," said Buck. The Los Angeles Symphonic Camerata is modeled after the Chicago Civic Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, and the New World Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, Buck pointed out. The Camerata is not fixed in size, nor in its choice of repertory, and may perform as an orchestra of 30, or 50, or 80, or even more. Then again, it may performance as an ensemble of ten, said Buck. The Camerata will present major artists in its concert season from October to June. Note: The Camerata's last performance of the 1998-99 season will be Fri., May 7, 8 p.m., at the Luckman Theatre, featuring soprano Renee Sousa. The program will consist of Concerto in E flat (Dumbarton Oaks) by Igor Stravinsky; Knoxville: Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber; and Symphony No. 5 in B flat major by Franz Schubert.
