Cal State L.A. Partners with Kaiser Permanente
to Enhance Cal State L.A. Graduate Nursing Program

Los Angeles, March 8, 1996 -- The Department of Clinical
Services at Kaiser Permanente, Southern California and
the Department of Nursing at California State University, Los
have recently formed a partnership to develop two
acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) options in
the master of science program at Cal State L.A.

The partnership, which was made possible through a grant totaling
nearly $100,000 from Kaiser Permanente, was coordinated by CSLA
Professors of Nursing Linda Fahey, MSN, RN, ANP-C, and Chris Latham,
DNSc, RN. The monies will be used to develop an educational infrastructure
for advanced nursing practice courses, specializing in adult cardiopulmonary
and pediatric critical care nursing.

The proposed ACNP options will offer graduate students in the
nursing master's program the opportunity to learn the new ACNP
role which was recently sanctioned by the American Association
of Critical Care Nurses and the American Nurses Association.

Aspects unique to the proposed options include focuses on vulnerable
populations that are at high risk for disease exacerbation and
complications; student clinical rotations through inpatient, outpatient
and community-based settings to develop a strong nurse care management
role; and a long-distance educational component using the CODEC
system of two-way audio and visual teleconferencing.

For students who are interested in the ACNP options, call (323)
343-4710 for more information.
