INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION -
LI ZIJIAN'S "HUMANITY AND LOVE" -
COMES TO LUCKMAN FINE ARTS GALLERY JULY 11 TO AUGUST 9

The international touring exhibition - Humanity and Love - of renowned Chinese oil painter Li Zijian comes to the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Gallery at Cal State L.A. from July 11 to Aug. 9, 1997. Dr. Patricia Woodlin is curator. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 12 noon to 5 p.m. and one hour prior to every performance at Luckman Theatre. It is free to the public. For information call (323) 343-6604.

An exhibition reception will take place on Saturday, July 19 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Having lived through poverty and the turbulent Cultural Revolution in China, Li Zijian has emerged as an artist who is now a recognized master of his field. During the past 30 years of his life as an artist, Li Zijian - born in China and now living in Southern California - has consistently maintained a simple and sincere pursuit of art, coupled with a deep, firmly grounded artistic talent, a wealth of experience drawn from the ups and downs of human life, and the distinctive qualities of purity, diligence and honesty. In recent years, he has been profoundly moved and subtly transformed by the influence of Buddhist thought. This has enabled him to open up a new world of art, a world of purity, truth, beauty and goodness. From 1991 to 1992, with the magnanimous support of Master Xing Yun, a contemporary Buddhist monk of high spiritual attainment who has devoted his energies to the propagation of "Human Buddhism," Li Zijian plumbed the depths of his mind to create a great series of oil paintings in the realist style, filled with humanity and love, imbued with a spirit of humanism and the special attributes of the Chinese people.

Li Zijian World Tour Exhibition: Humanity and Love will include the Native Land series, the Homeless series, the Mother and Daughter series, the Tibet series and the historical oil painting Nanjing Massacre as its main works among the more than 50 outstanding pieces to be displayed. The artist intends this exhibit, with its special power of expression and depth, to lead the viewer into "a world filled with humanity and love, a world radiating the vibrant power of life, a world of art that touches the hearts of all who enter it."

Li Zijian World Tour Exhibition, which has already appeared in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and New York City, will continue on to Vancouver, B.C. after the Luckman showing.

The Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex, now in its third season, brings the arts in their most creative and innovative forms to Southern California. Upcoming exhibitions include In the Neighborhood: A Juried Exhibition of Works by Members of the Arroyo Arts Collective from Aug. 16 to Sept. 30; the CSLA Faculty/Alumni Exhibition from Oct. 9 through Nov. 21 and Paintings by Alexandra Nechita, the child prodigy of the art world, from Dec. 6, 1997 through Jan. 18, 1998.
