CAL STATE L.A. CELEBRATES
2003 ENGINEERING, COMPUTER SCIENCE,
AND TECHNOLOGY WEEK

What:
The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) at California State University, Los Angeles will observe National Engineering Week with its own Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology Week Celebration. The theme is “Turning Ideas Into Reality.” Events are open to the entire campus community.

When:
February 15-21, 2003.

Where:
Cal State L.A. is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Freeways. Public permit dispenser parking is available in Lots C, F and G or upper level of Parking Structure II.

Visiting students:
The Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology Week will kick off with the second annual computer programming challenge for high school and community college students, PROGFest II, to be held on Sat., Feb. 15, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., in the Engineering and Technology building. On Mon., Feb. 17, John Ballance, vice president of Southern California Edison, will deliver the keynote address for ECST Week, 1-3 p.m., in the University-Student Union, Los Angeles Room.

In addition, the Association of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Cal State L.A.’s Department of Civil Engineering will host the Ninth Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Construction Contest on Fri., Feb. 21, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the E&T building. Students from more than 30 high schools in the surrounding area (including Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Southern San Joaquin) will participate in this competition, where teams design and build model bridges made from wooden craft sticks and white all-purpose glue. Awards go out to the competitors whose bridges withstand the greatest amount of load.

CSULA students:
Other exciting events planned for the week include a Popsicle Stick Tower Competition on Tue., Feb. 18, 12 noon-1 p.m. on the Engineering and Technology (E&T) building patio; a Pop Bottle Rocket Competition on Tue., Feb. 18, 1-3 p.m. on the baseball field; a Microsoft.Net Workshop on Tue., Feb. 18, 8-10 p.m., in room A220 of the E&T building; a Pinewood Derby Competition on Thu., Feb. 20, 6-10 p.m., at the P.E.T. Lab (E&T B13); and the ECST Banquet on Fri., Feb. 21, 6-10 p.m., at the Almansor Court, Alhambra.
